What is the difference between authentic Crittall and Crittall-look alternatives?
Authentic Crittall windows and doors are manufactured by Crittall Windows Ltd in Britain and are the only products that can legally use the Crittall name. Look-alike alternatives — typically made from aluminium or non-Crittall steel profiles — replicate the aesthetic but cannot match the sightline dimensions, material properties, or heritage credentials of the genuine product. For listed buildings and conservation areas, only authentic Crittall is routinely accepted by planning authorities. Lightfoot Windows supplies and installs genuine Crittall products exclusively — we are an official Crittall Specialist Partner and have been since 1935.
Are Crittall windows more expensive than uPVC or aluminium?
Yes, authentic Crittall steel windows carry a higher initial cost than uPVC and most aluminium alternatives. However, their lifespan of 60 to 100 years, minimal maintenance requirements, and the value they add to a property — particularly period homes and listed buildings — mean the long-term cost of ownership is often comparable or lower. They are also the only option accepted by many conservation officers, making them the only viable choice for certain projects regardless of price.
Do Crittall windows need a lot of maintenance?
No. Modern Crittall steel windows are powder-coated to resist corrosion and require little beyond periodic cleaning and an inspection of seals and weatherstripping every few years. Repainting is straightforward when eventually needed and can be done in-situ without removing the frames. With basic upkeep, a Crittall installation will outlast the building it is fitted into.
Are Crittall windows energy efficient?
Yes. The W20 TE thermally broken system — Lightfoot's most specified range — accommodates double and triple glazing units within a 20mm sightline, achieving U-values that meet current UK building regulations. Older Crittall single-glazed installations can also be upgraded to improve thermal performance without replacing the frames. Crittall steel windows do not have to mean draughty or cold — modern systems are designed for exactly the energy efficiency standards a new extension or renovation requires.
Can Crittall windows be repaired rather than replaced?
Yes, and this is one of the practical advantages of the genuine product. Because Crittall has manufactured consistently to the same profiles for decades, replacement sections, glazing seals, hinges and hardware are available to fit original frames. Many period properties with original Crittall installations opt for repair and refurbishment rather than full replacement — preserving the original frames while upgrading performance.
