PROJECT YORKSHIRE

Transforming a Heritage Cottage with Crittall W20

Crittall Product

When transforming a neglected traditional cottage in an East Yorkshire conservation area, the homeowners had one clear priority: they wanted their new garden room flooded with natural light and uninterrupted views across their garden.

Architect Matt Riley from Studio Six understood that the scale and ambition of the project demanded something special. Working within the constraints of a conservation area, he needed materials that could deliver both structural integrity and refined aesthetics. UPVC was immediately ruled out – it simply couldn’t provide the beauty the project deserved. Matt recommended Lightfoot Windows as specialist installers of authentic Crittall steel windows and doors.

Our team visited the property to conduct a detailed site survey, working collaboratively with Matt to develop a bespoke design. We specified an external Crittall Corporate W20 screen in RAL 7021 Black– a bold choice that would create dramatic contrast against the cottage’s older structure whilst complementing three heritage skylights.

The Corporate W20 range proved ideal for this ambitious garden room. Its iconic minimalist profiles maximise light, whilst the inherent strength of steel provides the structural capability required for large-scale installations.

As builder Edwin Atkinson from Atkinsons Builders Bridlington created the aperture, our surveyor Marcin returned to site to fine-tune the installation requirements, advising on handle colours and minor structural adjustments.

Despite tackling the installation during January’s challenging weather, our team of Reece and Brad completed the work swiftly and precisely to specification.

The finished garden room has become a stunning focal point within the renovated cottage. The industrial style of the Crittall steel frames works beautifully alongside the exposed bare brick, reclaimed cherry wood interior doors, and wooden coach house. Uplit by electrician Steve Smith, the space creates immediate impact.

“Everyone who turns up says ‘Wow’,” the homeowners report. “The phrase ‘a thing of beauty’ crops up regularly.”

The homeowners particularly appreciated Lightfoot’s collaborative approach: “If you want quality and beauty that also serves a purpose, we would recommend Lightfoot who listen to your requirements attentively. They did what they said they would do, when they said they would.”

This East Yorkshire project demonstrates how authentic Crittall steel windows can bridge traditional and contemporary design, creating spaces that respect architectural heritage whilst delivering modern performance and breathtaking aesthetics.
