When we admire the sleek profiles of steel windows gracing historic buildings and contemporary homes alike, we’re often looking at the legacy of one of Britain’s most enduring window designs.

Crittall windows have become synonymous with quality steel fenestration, their distinctive silhouettes having shaped our built environment for over 170 years.

As specialists supplying authentic Crittall products since 1935, at Lightfoot Windows we have been privileged to be part of this remarkable heritage story – one that continues to evolve while staying true to its roots in excellence and innovation.

The history of Crittall Windows

The story begins in 1849 in the market town of Braintree, Essex, where Frances Berrington Crittall established an ironmongery business. However, it was his son, Francis Henry Crittall, who would transform the family business after taking over in 1884.

Recognising the potential of steel for window manufacturing, Francis pioneered what would become revolutionary – metal windows with slimmer, stronger frames that allowed for larger glass panels and more natural light.

In 1909, Crittall Windows pioneered the fenestra joint, a solution that provides additional strength and allows for larger expanses of glass to be used in Crittall steel windows.

Aiding the war effort

The company expanded rapidly, with a new factory in Witham opening in 1919. During both World Wars, Crittall’s manufacturing capabilities were redirected to provide vital support to the war effort. The interwar period saw Crittall windows become an integral element of the Modernist and Art Deco design movements sweeping across Europe.

Prestigious projects

The company’s reputation for excellence led to prestigious commissions, including the Houses of Parliament, the Tower of London, and the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. Internationally, Crittall established operations in countries including Germany, Australia, India, and New Zealand, cementing their global influence.

Supporting employees

Francis Henry Crittall wasn’t just a businessman but also a visionary employer. When Braintree could no longer accommodate his expanding workforce, he funded the development of Silver End in Essex – a village providing quality housing and amenities for his employees. The village of Silver End remains a testament to the Crittall family’s commitment to social responsibility, with its Art Deco buildings showcasing their signature windows.

What makes Crittall products special?

The iconic style of Crittall windows and doors have stood the test of time, proving just as popular with modern architects and designers today as they were back in the nineteenth century. So why is this?

Put simply, the enduring appeal of these steel windows and doors lies in their blend of beauty and practicality. Slender steel profiles create an industrial aesthetic that is truly unmistakeable, and the versatility of this window design means Crittall products can be used in everything from sympathetic heritage restorations to contemporary newbuilds.

Sustainability and longevity

But it’s not just about aesthetics. Crittall windows are crafted for longevity, with a lifespan often exceeding 60 years. Their galvanised steel frames resist corrosion, while modern Crittall products incorporate thermal break technology and double glazing to meet contemporary energy efficiency standards without compromising the iconic slim profiles.

Sustainability is central to Crittall’s philosophy. Not only is steel a recyclable material, but the durability of quality steel windows means fewer replacements over time, reducing waste and environmental impact – a consideration increasingly important to today’s homeowners and architects.

Beyond imitations: why original Crittall windows matter

While “Crittall” has become shorthand for any steel-framed window, there’s a substantial difference between genuine Crittall products and lookalikes.

Unlike imitations, genuine Crittall windows are manufactured with techniques refined over generations, ensuring superior structural integrity and a quality finish.

This dedication to quality makes authentic Crittall windows not just a design choice but an investment that will perform reliably for decades. For those looking for quality steel windows, there simply is no better choice than Crittall.

Are Crittall windows and doors trademarked?

Recognising the popularity of Crittall products, the word “Crittall” was registered as a trademark in 1928. While many companies offer steel windows with a similar industrial look, only those manufactured by Crittall Windows Ltd can legally be called “Crittall” products. Only these can be guaranteed to be of the quality that has made the Crittall name.
